One day: 9.30am - 4.30pm
In the morning; learn all about the bees in our gardens, the types of bumblebee and solitary bee; their biology, ecology, decline and how we can help them. In the afternoon you will learn all about the honeybee taking a look inside a working beehive.
The morning we are joined by the Bumblebee conservation trust to look at how we can identify our most common bumblebee species found in gardens and discusses what we can do to help them. With a mix of theory and practical tips for identification, we will have a look at finding and identifying bees in our bee-friendly garden.
In the afternoon we are joined by Sheila Fellows-Turnbull, Chair of the local Beekeeping Association, who will explain why we need a balance of bumblebees and honeybees and we will look inside a working beehive in our apiary to see the colony structure, nest and honey stores, seeing how to identify the queen bee, workers and drones.
There are over 270 bee species in the UK and all are pollinators. Fortunately, there is much that can be done to benefit bees and it is entirely possible for individuals to greatly help, perhaps the simplest thing to do is to plant some bee-friendly plants in your garden and support local, responsible beekeepers. Throughout the day you will learn how to help the bees in much more depth.
What to Expect
An informative and enjoyable day learning all about both Bumblebees and Honeybees; how to help them in your garden and beyond.
Where the bees and the weather allow, this day will include an inspection of a hive. A bee-suit will be provided.
What to Bring
Please bring a packed lunch. Refreshments will be provided, including a homemade cake.
Parking is available at the entrance to our farm and our training room is just a short walk down our track.
Bring yourself, confirmation of your booking, a notebook and any questions you may have.
Bring gloves (washing-up type gloves are fine) and wellies/boots for the visit to the apiary.
Please arrive 15 mins before the start of the course for a prompt start
Cancellation Policy:
To ensure all attendees get the best experience from their training we only run our courses in small groups.
We therefore must operate with a strict cancellation policy: Refunds (or booking transfers) are not given for cancellations made within 2 weeks of the course. If a cancellation is made with more than 2 weeks notice but within 6 weeks of the course date, then we will try to re-sell your tickets, if we are successful then a refund will be issued for the full amount less a £10 administration fee. If a cancellation is made with more than 6 weeks notice, then a full refund will be issued.
