    Available Dates

    Sun 28th April 2024

    Programme

    One day 9.30am - 3.30pm

Using Sussex-grown willow we will work with a jig, employing 'reverse pairing' with bundles of willow to build our structure. The afternoon will be shorter, as we are often tired after the physicality of the morning, and we will be consolidating skills learnt in the morning to make a smaller obelisk.

    What to Expect

A fun, enjoyable, practical day learning willow weaving skills.

You will be able to take home your woven items that you make.

Willow weaving requires some strength and dexterity in the hands and course participants should be aware that sharp tools will be used and some activities will require reasonable physical input.

    Emma Purcell

    Tutor

Emma makes baskets, sculptural forms and cordage, mostly from willow but also from Rush and salvaged materials. Based in East Sussex, Emma grows and harvests her own willow bed, as well as foraging materials from the landscape, everything Emma crafts is by hand.  Seeing the role of baskets in the twenty-first century as somewhat niche… Emma attempts to preserve their place as aesthetic and functional forms, harnessing beauty, nature and craftsmanship in an age of mass-produced, disposable plastic vessels.
